Ben & Benn Through To Final Stage Of European Tour School

Ben Evans AimPoint Clinic

Ben Evans and Benn Barham successfully secured their spots for next weeks 6-round final qualifying stage for European Tour School after finishing 2nd & 3rd on -14 & -11 respectively.

Ben (Evans) finished in joint 2nd at 14 under par with Barham a further 3 shots back at -11.

I have worked with both players but most recently I have spent time with Evans at my studio in Sussex. It was during this time I was able to introduce him to Jamie Donaldson, Europe’s Senior AimPoint instructor. Barham is also an AimPoint student spending time with Jamie at Chart Hills in Kent.

Combining the two disciplines of knowing where you need to aim and then being able to aim your putter on the correct line have clearly been the influencing factors in both of their performances this week.

Another past student narrowly missed out on progressing to final stages as Francis McGuirk finished on -3 and lost in a play-off for the 20th spot which would have guaranteed his place in next weeks final.

Working on Evans’ stroke goes back to 2008, when we noticed there were some timing issues that was resulting in poor distance control. This is something we frequently monitor as when it slips, there tends to be a loop on the throughswing leading to putts being pulled and poor pace control (see below graph).

Ensuring good pace control is maintained will allow accurate reads as you will not be forcing the ball to the hole on an incorrect line, subsequently resulting in stroke bias which if left alone, will inevitable cause problems in the long term. As you can see below in comparison to the above chart, we have quickened Ben's backswing time to ensure a more positive and compact forward swing. This immediately gave us the results we needed as we knew where we were looking.
